Born 1977
Hao Shiming graduated from the traditional painting department of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 2000 and is highly skilled in traditional Chinese painting techniques such as ‘gongbi’, which involves drawing fine lines with small brushes. He has expanded on these traditions to develop his own unique style, ridding the canvas of unnecessary embellishments and moving towards abstraction. In one series, ‘Cursive Script in Tang Dynasty Style’, he systematically doubles his brush strokes and fills the canvas with numerous layers of characters. In another, Hao engraves large found boulders before painting over them with the same doubling calligraphic script. The artist is influenced by Chinese philosophy and has a keen interest in Buddhism. He is a member of the ‘New Ink’ movement which emphasises the usage of traditional materials to create new forms of classical paintings that combine calligraphy and traditional techniques with western painting methods. He now lives and works in Wuhan and Beijing.
